Hi there
Do you find this message annoying?
Why not make a post and get rid of it?

I think it only works for the unread posts since you last visit, once you look at a post it would not show any posts unless a new one was made while you were reading the first post.
What I do is click the forum button at the top of the forums, it makes the little button preceding each category darken if there is a new post.  I also use the "back" button to get back to the forum menu.  Using the back button might also solve your problem instead of the unread post button.

Yes Skip That's how it works.  New posts since you're last visit.

However if you just hit back, and don't click Latest Posts, you will got back to the original page.

What I was saying is use the back button after you have used the new posts button to take you back to the list of new posts.
Like I mentioned I just hit the forum button to refresh the forums page and then scroll down looking for the dark icon preceding the topic titles.
